WEEK 1: Activity #2 - What is Web 2.0 and (Why) Does it Matter?

RtI - Really Terrific Instruction goes Hey -Wire with the Web!

Activity #2 - What is Web 2.0 and (Why) Does it Matter?  challenged us to question the quick and snow-balling effects of online social connection.   The internet and technology can contribute to the sharpening of minds into a Web 2.0 world in which we and our children may be as quickly be left behind if we teachers do not start utilizing young America's creative talents and 16 hours/week of online tool savvy for more than shout-outs with BigMac Drive Through Rap or rants about why others should accept one's ignorant beliefs (you actually needs a link for that?).

I was overwhelmed by the information, the fast-paced format, and the urgency of the videos claiming that America's teachers have an obligation to empower our students in an educated- "space race" with other developing nations.  Where the videos frightened me, the Day in the Life of Web 2.0 effectively modeled the values of communication, individualization, and motivation available through effectively used web tools.  The combined videos and reading convinced me to use-it-or-lost-it with this creative and easily-individualized possibility.

  1. You've got it. Individualized learning, student-driven, that's what we're striving for. That's not to say the teacher is obsolete, students need the teacher to coach, encourage, facilitate.
